This week, several new local branches of the Croatian Labour Party have been established. The Party’s Presidency has also announced its formal decision regarding the selection procedure of candidates in the upcoming election. The local branches will decide on individual candidates in the election lists, and the Presidency will then confirm these decisions. This system was established due to the fact that the changes to the Election Law proposed by the Labour Party, which would enable voters to vote specifically for individual candidates and not for predetermined lists, were rejected in Parliament.

Mr Dragutin Lesar, the President of the Party, has also questioned the morals of the current Prime Minister, Ms Jadranka Kosor. He emphasized that even though she claimed not to have known anything about dirty money used as alternate means of financing her party, those funds were partly used to finance her election campaign in 2005., so she couldn’t be absolved from at least political responsibility. The biggest absurdity of all, according to Mr Lesar, was the fact that the current Interior Minister, Tomislav Karamarko, joined the ruling CDU which is under investigation and stands a reasonable chance of being indicted for corruption as a legal entity.

Mr Lesar also said that the decision to sell two companies paramount to the financial and energetic independence of Croatia (Croatia osiguranje and Janaf) in order to partially repay Government’s debt to pensioners represented further erosion of Croatia’s financial and energetic independence. He maintained that the next time the ruling party needed to buy voters, these two strategic companies would be irrevocably lost.

They also emphasized that the projects being announced are were the ones with a PR value, but not the ones which truly had an economic benefit.
